“We won’t stand by as Trump Republicans make America smoggy again“

Question: Did you really say „smoggy“?!

Californian Governor Gavin Newsom and his Attorney General Rob Bonta made this tough announcement to journalists when the US Senate followed the US Congress in overturning California’s ban on internal combustion vehicles from 2035. It reflects the position of the majority of the Democratic Party in the USA.

Unfortunately, it reveals an abyss of mendacity or stupidity. There are no other explanations.

Thanks to decades of work by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), exhaust gas purification from combustion engines has made enormous progress. Modern combustion cars usually produce even fewer air pollutants than the partially fossil-fuelled power generation for electric cars (see there).

Newsom, however, claims against all facts: “This is not about electric vehicles. This is about polluters being able to pollute more.”
He is lying.

Governor Newsom’s first grossly false statement is accompanied by a second: “Zero-emission vehicles are here to stay.”

Question: Did you really say „Zero-emission vehicles“?!

Even kids can understand that plug-in cars are not zero-emission vehicles as long as gas-fired power plants have to be operated to generate electricity.

(Incidentally, this also applies if they are charged by PV systems on your own roof. They only become climate-neutral if you remove the wheels, charge the battery during the day when there is plenty of sunshine and use this energy to relieve the burden on fossil fuel power plants at night. But then you can’t drive these cars.)

The great misunderstanding

This is not about more or less environmental protection.

Newsom and Bonta are deceiving the public: they are only pretending to protect the environment. In reality, they want to push through a purely ideological project of the Democratic Party and restrict consumer freedom.

The Democratic Party ignores the needs of the population. It simply does not care about the consequences of its blind actionism – job losses, higher costs of driving and a more unstable power grid due to the additional load. And all this without any benefit for the environment.
